Tom Cruise's first project since inking a new deal with Warner Bros. assembles a star-studded cast as development ramps up. The upcoming movie, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iàrritu, counts stars from Anatomy of a Fall and Killers of the Flower Moon among its growing ensemble.
Per Deadline, the untitled movie by Iàrritu cast Sandra Hüller, who starred in the Academy Award-winning legal drama, Anatomy of a Fall, which landed her a Best Actress Oscar nod. The film will also feature Breaking Bad's Jesse Plemons, known for his Oscar-nominated performance in The Power of the Dog, plus his roles in Killers of the Flower Moon and Kinds of Kindness, which won him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The upcoming film, produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, also signed Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor John Goodman, renowned for portraying Dan Conner in the classic '90s sitcom, Roseanne. Also in the cast are Talk to Me and Everything Now star Sophie Wilde, plus Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actor Michael Stuhlbarg. Meanwhile, actor and musician Riz Ahmed, who won the Best Live-Action Short Film Academy Award for his "The Long Goodbye" album, is in talks to join.
Tom Cruise Will Lead the Untitled Film
Cruise will star in and produce the untitled film from Iàrritu, confirmed in February shortly after the legendary actor signed a strategic partnership with Warner Bros. to develop various feature-length projects with the studio. The film's logline centers on the most powerful man in the world embarking on a major mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he unleashes destroys everything. Iàrritu, a four-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker, co-wrote the screenplay last year. The Mexican director notably helmed the Michael Keaton-led Birdman, with the dark comedy-drama winning Best Director, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay Oscars. Iàrritu also made The Revenant, which won him another Best Director Oscar and earned star Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited maiden Academy Award.
Since Cruise re-entered a working relationship with Warner Bros., fans have been speculating on the possible projects he'll develop. One project both Warner Bros. executives and movie lovers have been pushing for is a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel. While there's no word on whether Warner Bros. plans to develop a sequel, Cruise hinted at the possibility while celebrating Edge of Tomorrow's 10th anniversary. Meanwhile, Cruise's co-star from the original movie, Emily Blunt, is also open to a follow-up.
Though Cruise is back on board with Warner Bros., starring in Risky Business, Jack Reacher and The Last Samurai for the studio, he is still working with Paramount Studios. Cruise has been in the U.K. filming the upcoming spy thriller, Mission: Impossible 8, and is set to reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun 3, which is in early development at Paramount.
There is no production or release window yet for the untitled film.
Last August it was officially announced that Tom Cruise is the lead in the new film C without a definitive title C by the two-time Oscar winner for Best Director. The Mission Impossible actor was joined by Sandra Hüller ( Anatomy of a Fall ) and Jesse Plemons ( The Gentleman ). “I spent a little over a month participating in the rehearsals, everything was very fun,” says Nicolás without revealing too much.
According to Deadline, Iárritu's film will chronicle the life of a man, known as the most powerful man in the world, who tries to prove that he is the savior of humanity before true chaos breaks out. “It's a strange project for me,” says Giacobone.
-Because?
CI didn’t write it from scratch, it’s a script that Alejandro had written a long time ago with the Mexican writer Sabina Berman. A story that couldn’t be done at the time. Last year he invited me to rethink it a bit, to do a rewrite. It was a new job for me, I had never taken material from someone else, it’s a very creative challenge. I’m also collaborating on a project with Cate Blanchett…
González Iárritu will return to London soon to edit the Cruise feature, temporarily titled Judy. Here’s what he had to say about that Warner Bros theatrical release, due out on October 2, 2026, as well as Amores Perros which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best International Film.
DEADLINE: Can you tell us anything about Tom Cruise’s stunts in your new film? Even on The Mummy there was a stunt
AGI: The only thing I will tell you, and don’t tell anybody, is that it’s nothing of that. I’m so excited. It was an incredible experience with Tom, Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemmons, with Riz Ahmed, but it’s a character driven film mounted on the shoulders of Tom which I knew he was exactly the right person.
DEADLINE: Is it about what’s been floating out there — that he’s the most powerful global figure trying to convince everyone he’s its savior?
AGI: No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so ****ing impressed and happy.
DEADLINE: I have to imagine his tolerance for anything action assails DiCaprio’s.
AGI: He gives himself. He has an incredible sense of passion. It’s a brutal comedy. It’s a wild comedy of human nature. It’s scary and funny. It’s beautiful. I will start editing next week.
DEADLINE: With Revenant it was known that it was you versus the environment. But shooting in Pinewood in London, I would imagine, you’re in a controlled situation.
AGI: It was a very challenging film, you will see. It’s many borders of many things. Every film challenges me. I don’t like doing things that I’ve done already. This is something that we’ve never done and it’s exciting as well.
